Six migrants of various nationalities were killed by soldiers in Mexico
Six migrants of various nationalities were killed by Mexican soldiers on the Villa Comatitlán-Huixtla highway in Chiapas on Tuesday, October 1.
The Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) reported in a statement that members of the Mexican Army were conducting ground reconnaissance operations when they observed a pick-up vehicle on the highway allegedly speeding.
The vehicle evaded authorities, however, it was followed by two pickup trucks, commonly associated with criminal groups in the area, according to part of the statement.
During the operation, military personnel “heard gunshots.” In this regard, “military personnel stated that they heard detonations, so two elements activated their weapons, stopping the movement of one of the roads,” the document states.
Affected migrants
According to Sedena, upon approaching, the authorities found a group of 33 migrants of various nationalities, including Egyptians, Nepalese, Cubans, Indians, Pakistanis and Arabs.
Unfortunately, four of them were reported dead, 12 others were injured and 17 others were unharmed.
The military transferred 12 wounded people to the General Hospital of Huixtla, however, two died on the way, raising the death toll to six.
Currently, there are 10 injured people receiving medical attention, while the 17 unharmed migrants were transferred to the National Migration Institute (INM), according to the authorities.
Research
Following the incident, Mexican authorities announced that the two officers who shot the migrants were suspended from their duties for investigation purposes.
In turn, they were referred to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the entity that will be in charge of determining the legal responsibilities of the case.
