At least four people have died and several dozen have been injured in a shooting late on Saturday in the US city of Birmingham, in the state of Alabama (southeast), although the causes of the incident are not yet clear.
Birmingham Police confirmed on their X social media account that “multiple people have been shot” and said that “multiple deaths are possible,” without further details.
Later, Truman Fitzgerald, of the local police, said that “multiple shooters” opened fire on a group of people at around 11:00 p.m. (local time) and confirmed that there were at least four dead .
“There are dozens of people wounded by bullets in the area,” he said, according to the American television channel CNN. “I am told that at least four of them have life-threatening injuries,” he added.
He also stressed that the authorities have opened an investigation, but so far no one has been arrested. “We will do everything possible to clarify, identify and arrest those responsible for attacking our people,” he concluded.
The incident brings to 403 the number of mass shootings recorded so far this year in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one in which there are at least four victims in a shooting, not including the shooter.
