Police officer shoots and kills black woman who called 911 in Illinois
Following calls to emergency services regarding the likelihood of a “intruder” in the neighborhood, Illinois State Police (United States) published on Monday a video recorded by the body camera of one of its officers shooting and killing an African-American woman inside her own house.
According to CNN, the footage was made public as part of the trial against Sean Grayson, a cop accused of murder.
The pictures show the accused agent and another one chatting coolly inside the residence with Sonya Massey, the 36-year-old victim, before a quick fight starts around a boiling pot.
She said twice: “rebues him in the name of Jesus,” as one of the police said he was going to get away from her “boiling water.”
The officer responds, “You better not do that or I swear to God I’ll shoot you in the fucking face.” She apologizes then picks up the pot and asks the police officer to let it go.
Three gunfire that concluded the woman’s life were heard just right away. Saying he was “reprimanding her in the name of Jesus,” the officer then rationalizes himself by stating he was going to pour boiling water on her shortly after saying that.
Biden believes Sonya’s family “deserves justice”.
While US President Joe Biden has voiced his “heartbreak” over her passing and said Sonya’s family “deserves justice”.
“Justice is what Sonya’s family deserves. As her children and whole family negotiate this unimaginable and awful tragedy, my heart hurts for them. Biden stated in a White House statement: “Jill and I grieve with the rest of the country; our prayers are with Sonya’s family, loved ones, and community during this terrible time.”
In this sense, he said, the woman “should be living” and that this reminds us that “black Americans fear for their safety in a way that many ” other people do not, reminding us that all Americans should be free to ask for help without fearing for their life.”
