Adam Wingard Godzilla Sequel: Not Directing Next Film
It has been confirmed that Adam Wingard, responsible for Godzilla vs. Kong” and Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire,” will not be returning to direct the next installment in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise. The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that the separation was amicable and was due to scheduling conflicts. However, insiders indicate that the door remains open for the possible return of Wingard in the future.
New Projects for Wingard
Instead of continuing the Monsterverse franchise, Wingard is returning to his roots with “Onslaught,” an action thriller for A24, which is said to be more akin to his previous films like “You’re Next” and “The Guest.” This change will allow Wingard to explore projects more in line with his earlier work, leaving the direction of the next Godzilla film in the hands of another director.
The Future of the Monsterverse
Screenwriter Dave Callaham, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is writing the next Monsterverse movie. It is not yet known if this new installment will be a direct continuation of Wingard’s films or if it will take the franchise in a completely new direction.
Since its inception with “Godzilla” in 2014, the Monsterverse has generated more than $2 billion at the global box office and has successfully expanded into series such as “Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters” on Apple TV+, which recently secured a second season and more spin-off series.
