The Witcher Season 4 News: Release Date, Cast, Trailer & More
Netflix has always been betting heavily on ‘The Witcher’, the fantasy series based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, with Henry Cavill playing Geralt of Rivia. However, this adaptation is going to undergo a big change in its fourth season, as the former DC man of steel is getting off the ship and Australian actor Liam Hemsworth is taking his place as the film’s main character..
The point is that the show must go on, and now it’s time to stop and look at everything we know about season 4 of ‘The Witcher’, from the changes in the cast to its story, without forgetting Netflix’s new plan for its filming and what the future of the series is beyond the next batch of episodes.
When is The Witcher season 4 coming to Netflix?
The initial plan was to have it ready for release at the end of 2024, most likely in December of this year. However, it has been postponed indefinitely, so we will have to wait until well into 2025 to be able to see season 4 of ‘The Witcher’ on Netflix. And that is if the platform does not decide to cancel it, as there are several precedents for doing so on its part.
The history
The end of season 3 leaves open three major narrative paths for the fourth installment. On the one hand, Geralt travels to Nilfgaard, accompanied by Jaskier and Milva, to try to locate Ciri and rescue her from the danger that the witcher believes is lurking for her. On the other hand, Yennefer has formed the Lodge of Sorceresses, a powerful group that she will undoubtedly try to expand in the next episodes of the series.
Finally, Ciri has decided to call herself Falka in her union with the Rats, an organization of teenage criminals that we already saw briefly in season 3 and whose story will be explored in depth in a prequel to ‘The Witcher’ filmed in South Africa titled ‘The Rats’ that was filmed between April and July 2023, so it will arrive on Netflix before season 4.
The Witcher season 4: cast and protagonists
The big news for season 4 of ‘The Witcher’ is that Liam Hemsworth (‘The Hunger Games’ ) will play Geralt of Rivia, inheriting the character played in the first three installments by Henry Cavill. The latter released the following statement when announcing his departure from the series, in which he welcomed the Australian actor:.
For his part, Hemsworth reacted to his signing for the Netflix series by highlighting that “as a fan of The Witcher, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I am honored that he is handing over the reins to me and allowing me to pick up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I have been a fan of yours for years and have been inspired by what you have brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I am truly excited to enter the world of The Witcher.”
Obviously, season 4 of ‘The Witcher’ will feature several additional additions, but Netflix was quick to make another signing, and it’s a big one: Sharlto Copley, the protagonist of the unforgettable ‘District 9’, will play Leo Bonhart, a violent bounty hunter who is also one of the bloodiest villains in this universe. Other characters we’ll see in season 4 are Regis, a powerful vampire with surgical skills for whom Netflix is trying to hire a Hollywood star, and Zoltan Chivay, a war veteran and old friend of Geralt, but it’s still unknown which actors will play them.
However, the real big signing for season 4 is Laurence Fishburne, who will play Regis, a mysterious world-renowned barber-surgeon with an enigmatic past who will join Geralt on his adventure.
James Purefoy and Danny Woodburn are the other new additions confirmed by Netflix for season 4. The former will play Skellen, a high-ranking spy and advisor to Emhyr’s court, while the latter will become Zoltan, a dwarf who is among the fan-favorite characters from the franchise’s novels and video games.
Plus, Season 4 will bring back a ton of cast members from previous installments. Obviously, Anya Chalotra will continue to be Yennefer, while Freya Allan will reprise her role as Ciri, but we can also count on the returns of Joey Batey as Jaskier, Meng’er Zhang as Milva, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, Rochelle Rose as Margarita Laux-Antille, Therica Wilson-Read as Sabrina Glevissig, Safiyya Ingar as Keira Metz, Cassie Clare as Philippa Eilhart, Mecia Simson as Francesca Findabair, Mimi Khayisa as Fringilla Vigo, Ben Radcliffe as Giselher, Christelle Elwin as Mistle, Fabian McCallum as Kayleigh, Aggy K. Adams as Iskra, Juliette Alexandra as Reef, and Connor Crawford as Asse.
‘The Witcher’: Filming of Season 4
Netflix had initially planned to begin filming for season 4 in September 2023, but the Hollywood strike of screenwriters and actors led the company to reconsider and postpone filming until 2024. Finally, production work on season 4 of ‘The Witcher’ officially began at the end of April 2024.
The future of ‘The Witcher’ on Netflix
Netflix doubled down on its confidence in ‘The Witcher’ by announcing its renewal for a fifth season even before the release of the third. Given its undeniable drop in ratings, it remains to be seen whether they have not changed their minds, but in principle, the plan is for the filming of the next two installments to be done consecutively, surely in the hope that this will reduce costs.
Of course, let’s remember that Cavill said at the time that he had committed for seven seasons, which ended up not being entirely true.
