Brad Pitt Soap Opera: From Basketball Player to Hollywood Star
On May 4, 1964, Another World was born on NBC, a small half-hour series that, unbeknownst to us, would last a whopping 35 more years, until it came to an end on June 25, 1999, after 8,891 episodes. So that we can then complain about One Piece. This American soap opera was the first in many things: in talking about abortion, in doing a crossover with Guiding Light (another soap opera with 18,262 episodes), in launching two spin-offs (of a much shorter duration), and in giving its first opportunity to a boy who, for two episodes, would be Chris, a kid who played basketball.
Go out and play pitta
Throughout the thousands of episodes of Another World, we were able to see (well, the Americans at least) the faces of actors and actresses who would later make a career in Hollywood, such as Morgan Freeman, Kelsey Grammer, Anne Heche, Sarah Hyland, Ray Liotta, Lindsay Lohan, Luke Perry, Ed O’Neill, or Melissa Joan Hart. But among all of them, a 14-year-old boy who was athletic but also participated in musicals and school debates stood out: a certain William Bradley Pitt.
That’s right: Brad Pitt began his career in this soap opera, which was followed by episodic roles in series such as Problems Grow, Dallas, or Freddy’s Nightmares. It was 1987, and still all of his film roles were uncredited, such as in the films Hunk the Yuppie, No Man’s Land, and The American Dream. Little did he know that, in 1991, Thelma and Louise would change his life forever.
When Another World ended, Brad Pitt already had an Oscar nomination for 12 Monkeys. Curiously, with the end of the soap opera did not come that of its most beloved characters, who went to another that was already broadcast, As the world turns, at least until 2002, two of the characters died violently, and they decided to give up to finish the crossover. At this point, Pitt was neither there nor expected.
