Rings of Power Season 2: Release Date, Trailer, Cast & More
The first season of the most expensive series in history provoked all kinds of reactions on Amazon, as the response was far from unanimous. However, its success is indisputable, and the company hopes to repeat it with a second season of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ that promises to continue to delve deeper into Tolkien’s universe.
With the new episodes already being filmed, it’s time to review everything we know about season 2 of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, from its release date to the trailer, without forgetting the news about its cast. I remind you that this article will be updated as soon as more news about the series appears on Prime Video.
The history
The second season of ‘The Rings of Power’ will pick up where the first left off. That means that the dwarves will soon have to face the Balrog that has awakened in Moria and that was conveniently ignored in ‘Allies’. In addition, NĂşmenor has lost its king, and we will have to see the consequences of his death since Miriel is in great shape despite the unconditional support of Elendil, while the discovery of the palantir by Eärien, a character created specifically for the Amazon series, could also provide a lot of play.
On the other hand, the elves have forged their three rings of power, but the rings for other races are yet to arrive, and Sauron has yet to make the One Ring that controls the rest. The first season ended with him on his way to Mount Doom, so I imagine that season two will deal with that. Plus, the showrunners have promised that Sauron will now be able to move freely, hinting that he will have a big role to play in season two.
Finally, Gandalf and Nori have set off on a journey to Rhûn, a little-known place in Middle-earth that hardly appears on any map, even though it is the lake where the first elves were born. Everything points to the fact that the Amazon series will expand on this part of the mythology created by Tolkien.
Additionally, Prime Video has released the following official synopsis for Season 2:
When will the second season of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ be released on Prime Video?
Amazon wants the wait between seasons to be as short as possible, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to lower their quality standards, which is why it quickly ruled out releasing it in 2023. It’s true that the first one was hit hard by the coronavirus, but it’s also true that filming resumed in September 2020 and the first season didn’t hit Prime Video until two years later, so it will finally premiere on August 29, 2024.
Cast and protagonists
The vast majority of characters seen in the first season will reappear in the second, so we can assure you the returns of, among others, Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Robert Aramayo (Elrond), Markella Kavenagh (Nori), Ismael Cruz Cordova (Arondir), Charlie Vickers (Halbrand/Sauron), Daniel Weyman (The Stranger/Gandalf), Lloyd Owen (Elendil), Maxim Baldry (Isildur), Owain Arthur (Durin IV), Charles Edwards (Celebrimbor), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Miriel), Ema Horvath (Eärien), Benjamin Walker (Gil-galad), Sophia Nomvete (Disa), or Peter Mullan (Durin III). The one who is not continuing is Joseph Mawle, since Amazon has already confirmed that Sam Hazeldine (‘Peaky Blinders’ ) will be his replacement as Adar. Additionally, Nazanin Boniadi, who played Bronwyn, will also not appear in season 2, but it is unknown whether she will be replaced or if her character will simply be dispensed with.
In addition, the new installment of ‘The Rings of Power’ will feature several new characters, but Amazon has not yet announced the signing of any more actors. It is known that one of them will have to give life to CĂrdan the Shipwright, one of the most popular characters created by Tolkien, who is known for being an incredibly wise elf and also the oldest of his race in Middle Earth.
Among the signings already confirmed for season 2 of ‘The Rings of Power’, we have Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen ‘Zates’ Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Nicholas Woodeson, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Stuart Bowman, Gavi Singh Chera, William Chubb, Kevin Eldon, Will Keen, Selina Lo, and Calam Lynch. However, the most striking signing confirmed so far is Rory Kinnear, who will bring to life Tom Bombadil, one of the most beloved characters created by Tolkien.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 2: Filming
The first season of ‘The Rings of Power’ was filmed in New Zealand, but for the second season, there will be a change of scenery as Amazon has decided to move the filming of the series to the United Kingdom. The reason for this decision is that the company has opened a studio located next to London where it intends to film several of its series, including the one we are dealing with now. However, part of the filming has also taken place in Spain, particularly in different locations in the Canary Islands.
By the way, filming started even before the first batch of episodes had finished, as Amazon wants to shorten the waiting time between seasons as much as possible, as long as it doesn’t mean making any kind of artistic sacrifice.
