An athlete drowned live on air while participating in the 18th edition of the CrossFit Games held in the American city of Fort Worth, Texas. The harrowing situation was recorded by a camera that was filming the sports competition held at Marine Creek Lake in the United States.
100 meters from the finish line in the second race, the swimmer, a Serbian national, could not hold on any longer and ended up drowning, without anyone realizing it until a short while later. The competition has been cancelled.
The athlete passed away before the cameras.
The 18th edition of the CrossFit Games consists of 12 challenges over four days. The Serbian athlete’s death occurred at the start of the first day of the challenges, a race spanning more than five kilometers. After the first challenge, the athletes had to swim about 800 meters in the water to reach the next phase.
It was at this point that the Serbian athlete began to drown while the cameras were filming him without realizing what was happening. Sadly, the athlete ended up dying.
It should be noted that the area experienced adverse weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees, as reported by the CrossFit Games organization on its website.
Lazar Dukic, the athlete who drowned
It has been learned, thanks to one of the event’s sponsors, that the athlete who drowned is Lazar Dukic, a 28-year-old Serbian athlete who used to compete in this type of sporting event.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Lazar Dukic and his family. Sadly, Lazar tragically passed away this morning while competing at this year’s CrossFit Games. He was 28 years old,” sponsor FITAID announced.
The sports drink brand also said that they were “more than devastated. Our hearts are broken.” That’s why FITAID decided to donate $15,000 to the family of the deceased athlete.
Cross-fit games will be canceled.
The competition organizers have cancelled the event and wish to send their condolences to the family of the deceased athlete.
“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of a CrossFit Games competitor during the swimming portion of Individual Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games,” they announced in a statement shared on their social media.
“We are fully cooperating with the authorities and doing everything possible to support the family at this time,” the event’s organizers added.
Finally, CrossFit Games announced the cancellation of sporting events: “The remainder of today’s events have been suspended. The well-being of competitors is our first priority, and we are heartbroken by this tragic event.”
