Olympic Surfing Postponed: Strong Winds Delay Competition

The president of the International Surfing Association (ISA), Fernando Aguerre, announced on Wednesday that the third round of women’s surfing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has been postponed because the weather conditions on the Tahitian beach of Teahupo’o “are not suitable.”

“The conditions are not right. The strong wind that came, there was swell and then wind again, so the wind cuts and breaks the waves, and it takes hours and sometimes a day or two for the waves to stabilize and become orderly, and that is what we want,” said the director, according to the official website of the Olympic Games on Wednesday. The Argentine considered that all this is “part of the excitement of surfing,” which is not precise like science. “It is a mix of science and art; it is foresight, and the people who help us are people who know it very, very well,” continued Aguerre.

Regarding the expectations for resuming the competition, which has been suspended for the third consecutive day, he explained that the wind is decreasing and, in the meantime, “people can take another day off.” “Everyone can relax and recover, especially the athletes, after such an intense Monday. There were many falls; it is not the same to fall anywhere in the world as to fall here,” in Teahupo’o, he said. “We want to continue protecting the athletes. That is the number one priority, and then there is the show, the competition,” he stressed.

A decision is expected to be made for the next day at 17:45 Tahiti time (03:45 GMT on Thursday), Aguerre said. “We are in contact all day. It’s like being a father and being in the clinic, in the hospital, waiting for news from the operating room,” he stressed.
