Extreme Working Conditions and Sexual Harassment: The Dark Side of MrBeast’s Reality Show

MrBeast , one of YouTube ’s most prominent figures, is facing serious allegations about the working conditions of contestants on his reality show , which was shaping up to be a landmark competition. The class-action lawsuit filed by five Beast Games participants describes an environment where promises of a thrilling and fair experience morphed into dangerous chaos.

Instead of the expected adventure, the contestants – whose names have been withheld – claim to have been subjected to extremely poor working conditions, with insufficient food, lack of adequate breaks and scant medical care that put their health at risk. This scenario unleashed a series of accusations against the content creator and his team.

The problem is compounded by serious allegations of sexual harassment. Female participants in the Beast Games described a “toxic” work environment, where they were subject to constant harassment by production staff, the AP news agency reported.

Although many of the accusations were edited and blacked out in the documents that were released in an effort to comply with confidentiality clauses, according to the American media Rolling Stone , the contestants claim that these actions were encouraged by the conditions created by their superiors.

The women affected not only denounce the mistreatment they suffered, but also the environment that allegedly prevailed during the production of the Beast Games. “ It systematically fostered a culture of misogyny ,” Rolling Stone quoted.

“I expected to be challenged, but I didn’t think I would be treated like anything, anything less. And as one of the women, I can say that we absolutely felt like we were in a hostile environment. Honestly, they couldn’t have respected us less, as people, let alone as employees, if they tried,” said one woman who is part of the group of complainants, according to the magazine.

Jimmy Donaldson , MrBeast’s real name, told AP he had not received any news about the lawsuit filed by the five contestants.

Misrepresentation of the odds of winning

The allegations also center on the misrepresentation of contestants’ odds of winning the $5 million jackpot. According to the lawsuit, the Beast Games show allegedly violated California consumer protection laws by misleading participants about their true odds of winning.

The contestants were initially told they would be competing against about 1,000 people in the finals in Las Vegas, but upon arrival, they discovered there were actually twice as many competitors. This unexpected increase in entrants drastically reduced their chances of winning the prize, which the plaintiffs say constituted false advertising, AP reported.

California laws prohibit misrepresentation in sweepstakes and contests , and contestants claim production was unclear about the actual numbers, affecting them both emotionally and financially.

Compensation and workers’ rights

In addition to unsafe working conditions and misrepresentation of odds, the lawsuit filed by the contestants accuses MrBeast and his team of failing to uphold basic labor rights.

The contestants claim they were not paid minimum wage , overtime pay or the mandatory meal and rest breaks required by California labor laws. According to the plaintiffs, their work on the reality show became the entertainment product that MrBeast sold, without them being compensated.

Throughout production, they faced long hours of filming the Beast Games without adequate access to food or medicine, giving them what they describe as “limited sustenance.” One contestant told Rolling Stone that he only ate a little rice during 15-minute breaks out of a total 16-hour shift.

According to Rolling Stone , the lawsuit reads: “ Defendants employed superior bargaining power to force contestants to sign abusive contracts with unlawful terms and illusory obligations and also mischaracterized contestants [redacted] to avoid Defendants’ employment obligations under California law.”
