US Open: Jannik Sinner’s trophy could only be signed by Tiffany & Co.
It did not go unnoticed by those who saw Jannik Sinner lift the US Open trophy on Sunday 8 September that the cup, and the plate for the other finalist, arrived accompanied by the unmistakable Tiffany & Co. packaging. The thought was immediate: It could only be like this in New York , where Tiffany’s has its headquarters on Fifth Avenue, also made immortal by the famous film starring Audrey Hepburn.
First designed by Tiffany & Co. in 1987 , these trophies are awarded annually by the United States Tennis Association to the men’s and women’s singles champions. Each trophy is handcrafted from sterling silver in the Tiffany Hollowware workshop in Cumberland, Rhode Island, where artisans employ centuries-old techniques such as spinning, silversmithing, turning, casting, wire forming, soldering, stamping, polishing and hand engraving.
As of 2023, the men’s and women’s commemorative trophies are the same size, standing approximately 18.5 inches tall and weighing approximately 10 pounds. From concept to finished product, both trophies take more than 4 1/2 months to create, respectively.
This year, prior to the Singles Championship ceremonies, a Tiffany & Co.-branded display was placed on the court to present the first-ever complete set of US Open trophies. For the second consecutive year, the company oversaw the on-site hand-engraving of the singles commemorative trophies immediately following the match.
Tiffany & Co. creates the US Open trophies for all winners each year, including the doubles and wheelchair tennis tournaments. It also does so for many of the world’s biggest sporting events. Inspired by the energy of competition, these symbols of athletic achievement are a tribute to the athletes’ dedication and the highest standards of excellence.
