Boca Juniors sanctioned ‘Chiquito’ Romero after his controversial fight with the fans

Boca Juniors has suspended goalkeeper Sergio ‘Chiquito’ Romero for two matches for a heated argument with fans at La Bombonera on Saturday after the 1-0 defeat against River Plate in the Argentine Superclásico.

The match had barely finished and as he was heading to the locker room, Romero was insulted by a fan from the stands and the former Argentina goalkeeper responded by jumping over a fence and getting into a face-to-face argument with the supporter.

This Monday, Boca Juniors announced on its social media that “due to the publicly known events that occurred at the end of the match played at La Bombonera last Saturday, the decision has been made that our player Sergio Romero will not be called up for the next two matches we have to play.”

The sanction, then, leaves Romero out of the matches against Belgrano de Córdoba and Argentinos Juniors, in which he will be replaced by the young Leandro Brey, who had already had good performances in the ‘xeneize’ goal.

“We also inform you that the three supporters who caused the incident in question have been identified and that the corresponding measures will be applied to them,” Boca’s statement said.

On Saturday, after the incident, the goalkeeper admitted his mistake and apologized, in addition to signing a violation report drawn up by the Buenos Aires city government.

“He insulted me so much that he found me. I was angry but calm. He found me, I lost my temper and I came back. I didn’t want it to happen, but that’s it and I apologize. I was wrong with my reaction,” admitted the 37-year-old goalkeeper.
