Jannik Sinner champion at the US Open: a kiss to his girlfriend
Like Jannik Sinner, no Italian has ever done so. In three sets (6-3; 6-4; 7-5) the Italian beat Taylor Fritz in the first final, for both, at the US Open. For Sinner, it is the second Slam title of the season and of his career after the one at the Australian Open and it is the first time that an Italian tennis player, in singles, has managed to win two in the same year. Sinner is also the first Italian to win a Slam title as number one in the world because no Italian has ever reached the top of the ATP rankings.
In the US, Flavia Pennetta had won in 2015, declaring with the trophy in hand that she would end her career there. Sinner has it wide open in front of her at 23 years old and with an advantage of more than 4000 points on the second in the ranking.
As in Australia there is a hug with the team, here there is also a kiss with his girlfriend, Anna Kalinskaya , the first one we see in public. The thought, as in Melbourne , goes to the family. « I dedicate this title to my aunt who is not very well and who is a very important person in my life. If there is one wish I can make to everyone it is health , which is very important and which, unfortunately, is a wish that cannot always be made.
Sinner is moved, but it is an award ceremony with a smile and with a different tension from January, as different, less fought, was the match. “He was too good” said Fritz. There was the doping issue, with still the possibility of an appeal from the international anti-doping agency, there were torments and victories. Everyone said it, him and his coach first: Jannik has grown on and off the court. ” I have understood in these days how important the mental part is, in every sport , and I want to share this title with my family, even those who stayed at home, and I thank this audience for being so correct. It was a real honor”. These are the last words before receiving the check for over three million dollars, and the trophy from Andre Agassi who last won here 25 years ago, when Jannik Sinner, the boy who revolutionized Italian tennis , had yet to be born.
