Shailene Woodley to play Janis Joplin, the “Cosmic Witch,” in a new autobiographical film: the details
Shailene Woodley will star in and produce a biopic about iconic singer Janis Joplin, also known as the “cosmic witch.” The actress was cast in the role over Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink, and Melissa Etheridge, who were all previously considered to star in the film.
The film project, which will explore the life of the legendary rock star, will receive $2.5 million in funding through the California Tax Credit.
In a statement, Woodley highlighted the importance of California in Joplin’s life, being the epicenter of a counterculture that still has an enormous impact today.
“The state became the stage on which she explored not only the world of music but that of her vibrant humanity. (…) I feel like Janis would be grinning from ear to ear, cruising down PCH in her psychedelic Porsche, knowing that her story is bringing opportunity and funding to the city and people who meant so much to her,” the star said.
The Divergent actress expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in the project, emphasizing that only in California could a film about the artist behind songs like “Maybe” and “Peace of My Heart” become a reality.
“Thanks to the California Film Commission’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program, I and the other producers on this project believe that California is the only place where a slice of Janis’ life can be filmed with authenticity and truth, and we are very grateful to have been given the green light to do so.”
