Among the list of the most anticipated films of 2024 and the best releases, there is a truly special title: a sequel to one of those productions that will become more important as the generation that discovered them at the time reaches the networks, underscoring their importance in the calendar of upcoming Disney animation releases. And the fact is, ‘Moana’ (John Musker, Ron Clements, Don Hall, and Chris Williams, 2016) is, for many, one of the most underrated Disney films, a gem that has been earning a place in the hearts of the fandom, and that includes some of the best quotes from Disney and Pixar films.
John Musker and Ron Clements, responsible for such gems as ‘Basil, the Great Mouse Detective’ (1986), ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1989), ‘Aladdin’ (1992), and ‘Hercules’ (1997), teamed up with Chris Williams and Don Hall to tell this story that takes us to some islands in the South Pacific to meet Moana Waialiki, a young woman who wants to explore the world by sailing the ocean. She is the only daughter of an important captain who belongs to a family with several generations of sailors who, chosen byfatey, will set sail on the adventure of a lifetime with Maui, a demigod with a troubled past.

Mark your calendars: the theatrical release date for Moana 2 will be November 29, 2024, the same day as the highly anticipated Wicked (Jon M. Chu, 2024).

The official synopsis for Moana 2 teases that the film will reunite Moana and Maui three years later “on a thrilling new journey with a crew of unlikely sailors. After receiving an unexpected call from her ancestors, Moana must travel to the distant seas of Oceania and venture into dangerous, long-lost waters for an unprecedented adventure.”

In the original version, Vaina’s voice will once again be that of Auli’i Cravalho, the young woman who, since the premiere of the original film, has been seen in the series ‘The Power’ and in films such as ‘Crush’ (Sammi Cohen, 2022) and the recent ‘Mean Girls’ (Samantha Jayne, Arturo Perez Jr., 2024).
For his part, Dwayne Johnson will return as the irresistible demigod Maui, whom he will also bring to life in thelive-action filmn ‘Moana’ in 2026.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, ‘Moana 2’ features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foai, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
