Live Action Moana Filming Starts at Year-End
Dwayne Johnson has shared a new update on his social networks, announcing that the live-action ‘Moana’ movie will begin production at the end of the year, probably in the fall. Additionally, the actor has shared a behind-the-scenes video where we see Johnson in a recording booth as part of his preparation to play Maui.
As we announced last summer, Thomas Kail, director of various Broadway productions such as the musicals ‘In the Heights’ and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Hamilton’, will make his feature film directing debut with this project. The film will be produced by Dwayne Johnson, as well as Dany and Hiram Garcia through Seven Bucks Productions, Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co., Jared Bush, and Dana Ledoux Miller. Auli’i Cravalho, the voice of Moana in the original film, will executive produce alongside Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.
The new live-action film will arrive on July 10, 2026, although first, on November 27 of this same year, the long-awaited sequel to’Moana’will arrive, a film written and directed by David G. Derrick that will once again feature the voices of Cravalho and Johnson in their respective roles of Moana and Maui.
Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the film was not only a commercial success with more than $600 million raised worldwide, but it also generally earned positive reviews and earned two Oscar nominations, specifically for the Best Animated Film and the Best Original Song.
