Sandman Season 2: Release Date, Cast, and New Plots

Despite being one of the most celebrated and famous works of fantasy author Neil Gaiman, the attempts to bring Sandman, the comic book saga centered on the steps of the eternal Morpheus after having been captured by a human and lived in captivity for several centuries, on screen remained fruitless for years until finally the author himself, together with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg, demonstrated that it was not a work impossible to film.

Finally, after years in development and multiple attempts that did not bear fruit in the past, Sandman became a reality with Netflix in the summer of 2022, as the streaming platform’s great commitment to fantasy was marked by the premieres of The House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

With Tom Sturridge as the protagonist in the role of Sueño and leading a cast completed among others by Jenna Coleman, Vivienne Acheampong, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Madison Alexander Park, David Thewlis, Boyd Holbrook, and Gwendoline Christi , Sandman was highly praised in its day for its fidelity to the original work, but its renewal took a few months in which not even Gaiman himself was convinced that the series could continue its journey on Netflix.

Finally, Netflix confirmed the renewal of the series in November of that same year, after months of uncertainty about its future. Take note of everything we know about Sandman season 2 below:

Sandman Season 2 Release date

Filming for the second season began in June 2023, just before the start of the actors’ strike called by the SAG-AFTRA union, which lasted several months. Finally, Gaiman confirmed that they had resumed filming in November 2023, coinciding exactly with the day on which, 35 years earlier, the first issue of the comic was published.

At the moment, it has not been confirmed that filming has come to an end, and Netflix has not confirmed or advanced a possible release date. However, it seems feasible that the second season could be ready for its premiere in the fall of this year, 2024, or the first months of 2025.

Sandman Season 2 Returns and new additions

First of all, let’s start with the returnsSandman would not be possible without its titular character, Dream, who will once again be played by Tom Sturridge, but we can and should also count on the returns of Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, or Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine.

Furthermore, in this new stage, we can expect the most interesting and long-awaited additions. As comic fans know, the Eternals are made up of Dream, Death, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Delirium, and Destruction, of which we have only been able to meet the first four. Thus, as in the graphic novel, the rest of the “brothers” will appear as the story progresses, with Delirio having been confirmed as one of the great additions of season 2.

Sandman Season 2: How the story continues

Although many details have not yet been revealed about the new installment of the series, we can say that, just as the first installment addressed the first two comics, possibly the second will delve fully into the following ones. Furthermore, fans of Gaiman’s work know that Morpheus has a curious and revealing family reunion ahead of him, which confirms the castings that are being carried out for the incorporation of new characters. However, not all eternals may appear in the second stage.

Likewise, the second installment will pick up where the first left off, and Gaiman was quick to confirm that the conflict with Lucifer will continue: “I’m very pleased to tell people who don’t know anything about what’s coming in Sandman: “If we do season 2, we’ll have the rematch and Morpheus will go back to hell. And Lucifer has some surprises in store that Morpheus doesn’t expect.”
