Hotel Collapse in Germany: 1 Dead, 8 Trapped

At least one person has died and eight are trapped under the rubble after a hotel in the town of Krov partially collapsed in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, about 100 kilometers west of Frankfurt.

According to a statement issued by the police, the accident occurred on Monday night for reasons that are still unclear, and there were fourteen people in the building. Neighboring buildings have been evacuated for fear that the building could completely collapse. A total of 31 people were evacuated, according to the police, who reported that a force of 250 people, including officers, paramedics, and specialists, had been deployed to the scene.

“Several people were able to leave the building on their own and are being treated by emergency services and the authorities,” police said on Wednesday, adding that some were seriously injured.

According to a police spokesman, a family with a small child was among those arrested. The child is “sleeping peacefully for the moment, and we are in contact with the parents,” the spokesman said.

Krov, known as a holiday resort, has just over 2,000 inhabitants.

“Police are asking citizens not to travel in the area around the village of Kröv, as the road through the village is closed and there will also be roadblocks and traffic closures further ahead,” the police statement said.
