Ship Adrift Tokyo: 121 Passengers Stranded by Fuel Leak
The Coast Guard said that a fuel leak on a ship carrying 121 passengers and crew left the vessel adrift in waters south of Tokyo on Wednesday as it traveled near one of the Izu islands.
The ship, owned by Tokai Kisen Shipping, reported marine watchdogs at 10 a.m. local time (1 a.m. GMT) that it had lost control of the vessel due of a leak while it was roughly 20 kilometers southwest of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
Heading to Shikine Island in the Izu archipelago, the ship, which left Tokyo Bay at 7:45 a.m. (22:45 GMT Tuesday) had five staff members and 116 passengers, including children.
As aired live on Japanese public broadcaster NHK, no injuries have been recorded from the event; a coastguard patrol boat and another vessel have arrived to tow the ship to safety.
