Kentucky shooting: Multiple people shot near I-75; search underway for suspected shooter
Several people were shot in a shooting near Interstate 75 in Laurel County, Kentucky, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
In a video posted on the official account of the city of London, where the attack occurred, Mayor Randall Weddle said that at least seven people were injured, although not all by gunfire. “There is no one deceased so far,” he said in the video.
Gilbert Acciardo, public affairs officer for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, told The New York Times that five people were shot and were in stable condition.
Mayor Weddle urged the public to remain “vigilant” since the main “person of interest,” identified by authorities as Joseph A. Couch, has not been arrested.
The Sheriff’s Office released a photo of Couch, 32, who it said should be considered “armed and dangerous.”
“If you have any information regarding the whereabouts or location of this individual please contact the London-Laurel County 911 Center or 606-878-7000,” police said in their Facebook post.
Gov. Andy Beshear also asked people to avoid the area on social media X. “We will provide more details as we have them,” he added.
After several hours of ordering the highway closed, Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reopened the road in both directions. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Louisville said it was currently providing support to state police following the “critical incident” on I-75.
