Israel Yemen Conflict: Iran Warns of Escalation
Iran has condemned Israel’s attack on Houthi rebel positions in the Yemeni port of Hodeida, warning of “an escalation and expansion of the war as a result of Israel’s dangerous adventures.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani condemned late on Saturday’s Israeli action against its Houthi allies in Yemen, which left some 80 people injured, Press TV reported.
“The oppressed but strong people of Yemen are paying the price for their noble support for the innocent people, including women and children, of Gaza,” Kanani said. At the same time, the diplomat warned that such attacks could lead to “an escalation and expansion of the war as a result of dangerous Israeli adventures.”
Tehran is an ally of Yemen’s Houthis, who are part of the informal anti-Israeli alliance known as the “Axis of Resistance,” which also includes the Lebanese group Hezbollah, the Palestinian Hamas, and a myriad of Iraqi militias.
At least three dead
At least three people have been killed and 87 others “severely injured” in an Israeli attack on the port of the Yemeni coastal city of Al Hodeida on Saturday, the health ministry, controlled by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, said on Sunday.
The number of wounded has now risen from 80 to 87, “mostly from serious burns, and three others have died in the initial toll of the Israeli aggression against Al Hodeida,” said the spokesman for the Houthi Ministry of Health, Anis al Asbahy, on his X account.
Many of the injuries were caused by the severe fires caused by the bombing, which targeted several oil depots and a power station. The Houthi group, which is close to Iran, has launched most of its attacks against Israel from the port that was attacked on Saturday.
This is the Israeli army’s response to a drone launched on Friday by Houthi rebels, which exploded over Tel Aviv and killed one civilian. It is the latest attack by the Yemenis in a series of more than 200 actions with ballistic missiles and drones since mid-November. Most are intercepted before reaching their target, although, on this occasion, the action stands out for being the most far-reaching since hostilities began and the first to leave victims.
Israel intercepts a Yemeni missile in the Red Sea.
Early Sunday morning, the Israeli army intercepted a surface-to-surface missile over the Red Sea, launched from Yemen towards Israel, after the Israeli air force bombed Houthi rebel positions in the Yemeni port of Hodeida the day before.
“The Israel Defense Forces’ air defense complex successfully intercepted a surface-to-surface missile approaching Israeli territory from Yemen using the Arrow 3 (long-range) system.
,” the army said in a statement. The projectile did not enter Israeli territory, but rocket and missile sirens did sound in the southern city of Eilat.
“The incident is over,” the army confirmed, referring to the missile, which was attributed to the Houthis and was intercepted by the Arrow 3 missile, which can destroy long-range guided missiles even at an altitude of more than 100 kilometers and which Israel began using last year.
Short- and medium-range rockets, usually launched from Gaza or southern Lebanon, are intercepted by the Iron Dome system, but the Arrow 3 has also been extensively used in parallel to the war in the Strip in response to long-range missiles launched by the Houthis in Yemen, the first on July 31, or by pro-Iranian militias in Iraq.
“Like Hamas and Hezbollah, the Houthis are an integral part of Iran’s axis of evil. This axis is not only acting against Israel but threatens the peace of the entire world,” stressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last night, who followed the attack on Hodeida by Israeli Air Force F-35 planes live on Saturday evening.
