Emma Watson said she keeps turning down roles in Hollywood for this compelling reason
Emma Watson is still staying away from the spotlight and fans can’t help but wonder why.
Since 2019, which was the last time the actress participated in a film, the Harry Potter star continues to turn down roles in Hollywood.
The 34-year-old actress took a break from her career nearly six years ago, turning down roles in the live-action Cinderella and La La Land, after taking on the role of Meg March in Greta Gerwig’s version of Little Women.
What has Emma Watson done since her last movie?
In 2020, Watson turned her attention to activism, telling fans she was willing to “take on a role where I work to amplify more voices and continue to learn from those with different experiences.”
In December 2023, the star revealed that she felt ‘trapped’ when looking back on her acting career, leading her to take a break.
“What I found really difficult was that I had to go out and sell something that I didn’t really have much control over,” he told the Financial Times.
“It was very difficult to have to be the face and spokesperson for things that I couldn’t be involved in the process of.”
But the actress hasn’t been sitting back doing all this for the past six years, the star launched a wine-inspired gin, called Renais, alongside her brother Alex, as well as enrolling in a creative writing MA at Oxford University.
In addition to that, she tried her hand at directing and made her debut with a commercial for the Prada Paradoxe fragrance.
The reason why Emma Watson keeps turning down roles in Hollywood
During an interview with Vogue in 2023, Watson explained the reason behind her hiatus.
Asked why she turned down big opportunities in Hollywood, the actress replied: “Because I’m in a career that moves so fast, the decision to take the time to do those things feels like a big decision.”
“Choosing to go back to writing, studying and getting behind the camera was scary for me because I had never done it before. I had always been in front of the camera; I had always been an actress,” the star continued.
Watson also revealed what she benefited from taking her break.
“I’m very glad I did it because I feel like I have my own voice, creative space and sovereignty in a way I don’t think I’ve had before: more autonomy,” she said at the time.
