Taylor Swift has spoken out: the singer will vote for Kamala Harris in the elections
The polls gave Kamala Harris the win after tonight’s debate and Taylor Swift has been in charge of delivering the coup de grace to tip the balance in favor of the Democratic candidate. If there are still people who doubt the power of the American singer (generally not given to giving opinions on political matters, at least not directly) it is because they were not on Earth when she organized her The Eras Tour. A few minutes after the presidential debate, Swift pointed out in an Instagram post that Harris would be the “warrior” who would fight for the rights and causes she believes in.
“As a voter, I make sure to watch and read as much as I can. I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. I believe she is a talented and steady leader and I believe we can accomplish much more in this country if we are guided by calm and not chaos,” reads the post she left on Tuesday night to her 238 million followers on Instagram.
She also encourages her fans to vote. The singer also mentions in her post her fear of misinformation, addressing the AI-generated images shared by Donald Trump in late August that showed Swift herself and her fans backing the president’s campaign: “It evoked my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It led me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans.”
Swift, who accompanied her entire post with a photograph of herself hugging a cat, signed the text as “the childless cat lady,” in reference to the comments the Republican candidate made last night, bringing up a surreal hoax about immigrants in the United States who, in the Republican’s words, ” are eating the dogs and the cats .” Although in reality Swift’s words are more related to what Tucker Carlson , the then Fox News host, said in 2021, when he said that the Democrats in the Biden administration were “a bunch of crazy childless cat ladies, sad about their own lives and the decisions they’ve made.”
Without going into the fundamental fact that Taylor Swift is not a political figure, it is undeniable that the influence she wields both at home and globally could be key to moving the vote. For now, Trump’s campaign has dismissed Swift’s endorsement, with spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt saying: “This is further proof of what the Democratic Party has become. A party of the wealthy elites.”
But Swift has a strong following in the US , especially among Gen Z, and a generally favourable opinion from both Democratic and Republican voters. She had endorsed the Democratic candidates in 2018 and Joe Biden in 2020, but The Guardian reports that she has since preferred not to comment on the matter. Following the publication, Tim Walz praised the singer’s “courage”: “I say this as a cat owner.”
Celebrity endorsements of a political candidate don’t translate into higher turnout, but Swift’s fan base is particularly large and often vocal about women’s rights. In August, the Swifties for Kamala coalition raised more than $138,000 for the Democratic candidate at a virtual rally that included Carole King and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand.
