Madonna’s younger brother dies after battling cancer

On social media, pop queen Madonna announced the sad news of her brother’s death, bidding him farewell with a heartfelt message.

Days after the death of her stepmother and father’s wife, Joan Gustafson Ciccone, the famous woman suffers another loss.

“My brother Christopher is gone. He was the closest human being to me for a long time. Dance was a kind of glue that held us together. Discovering dance saved me and it saved him as well. My ballet teacher, also named Christopher, created a safe space for my brother to be gay, a word that wasn’t spoken or even whispered where we lived.”

“The last few years have not been easy. We didn’t talk for a while, but when my brother got sick, we met again. I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible. He was in a lot of pain at the end. Once again, we held hands, closed our eyes and danced together. I’m glad he’s not in pain anymore. There will never be anyone else like him. I know he’ll be dancing somewhere.”

In 2016, Madonna’s brother married Ray Thracker, a British actor who was at her side when she died. Christopher kept a low profile for years, although his talent and his relationship with Madonna led him to collaborate with her, working as a dancer, designer and artist.

Ciccone was involved in his sister’s career in the 1980s, appearing in videos such as “Lucky Star,” and working as artistic director for the Blond Ambition World Tour and director of The Girlie Show Tour. For two decades he was at his sister’s side, working on choreography, direction and costumes. He also designed his sister’s homes in New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

Ciccone began his career as a dancer and choreographer, and played a major role in his sister’s early career, acting as her creative advisor. He also directed several music videos and tours, dabbled in interior, shoe and furniture design. He studied dance at Western Michigan University and Oakland University before moving to New York to work with Madonna , and in recent years has returned to Michigan to be with his family and husband.
