Jos Manuel Martins Teixeira Gomes (Matosinhos, Portugal, 1970) will be in charge of leading the new SD Ponferradina project from the bench. The club has reached an agreement with the coach so that from next July 7 he begins to lead the team.
José Gomes face ace with Deportiva his second experience in LaLiga SmartBank, in which he already participated with UD Almera. The new Blue and White coach directed two games of the promotion playoff to First Division in the 2019-20 season and continued in the 2020-21 season until matchday 36, when he was relieved with the team in third position. They also reached the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey.
The Portuguese coach will continue in El Bierzo for a long career on the bench that started in his country, where he was part of the FC Paos de Ferreira, CD Aves, Leixoes SC, Uniao Leiria or Moreirense FC. Starting in 2008, he began a stage in which he served as Jesualdo Ferreira’s assistant on the benches of SL Benfica, FC Porto, Malaga CF and Panathinaikos FC.
Gomes also accumulates great experience at an international level. Thus, in 2013 he directed the Videoton FC Hungarian and in 2014 joined the Al-Taawoun FC from Saudi Arabia, a country where he also served in the Al Ahli. In addition, in the United Arab Emirates he directed the Baniyas FC.
Back in Portugal, at the start of the 2018-19 season, he directed the top category at Rio Ave FC with which he starred in a great start to the championship. Halfway through that course he joined the F.C. Reading English, whom he led in the Championship. And later he returned to the First Division of Portugal to occupy the CS Martimo bench, where he coincided with the blue and white goalkeeper Amir Abedzadeh.
After his time at UD Almera, he returned to Al-Taawoun FC last season. After completing his third spell at the Saudi club, he now returns to Spanish football and takes charge of SD Ponferradina for the 22/23 season.
