Ask. With what two words would you define yourself as a coach?
Response. Methodical and analytical.
P. You have now begun to write your story as a coach but you had been with Unai Emery for many years. What aspects of him have remained?
R. I think we have formed a good symbiosis between the two. We are friends, we were partners as players and then as coaches. I think we have been learning from each other and we have had a long successful career. We have been self-taught. We really like football and we were constantly talking about players. We are passionate and football is our way of life. We are in permanent contact. I wish him the best and he has wished me the same. It is a pleasure to have been able to learn from a great coach like him.
P. You have had promotions as second coach with Emery and as first with Ibiza. That experience will come in handy to transfer it to Real Zaragoza, right?
R. All experiences are valid. Obviously, we know the difficulty of the categories. All the experiences I have had will help me in many situations in such a long season.
With Emery, I think we’ve been learning from each other and we’ve had a long successful track record. It has been a pleasure working with a great coach like him.”
Q. What coach or style of play do you stick with?
R. The most important thing is to take what you like from each of them. For example, last year with Juan Ignacio, Real Zaragoza had that competitiveness and was difficult to beat, with good numbers at a defensive level. Take a bit of all to have your own identity. I like all styles because it has been shown that you can win with anyone. It is better to have a team that has different alternatives and is difficult to figure out. I have played with all kinds of systems and it is more important to know what you want to convey to your players.
P. Real Zaragoza is going to celebrate 10 years in the Second Division. Can you imagine achieving promotion?
R. I dream of how privileged I am and how nice it would be for people to feel happy with our work and proud of the performance of our players. You have to dream of little things to get to the end.
P. Have you been able to speak with Juan Ignacio Martínez?
R. I have his phone number and a good relationship with him. He is very affectionate, a gentleman and someone very close. Talking to him is one of the things I want to do in the next few days.
Q. And with Jorge Mas?
R. We have permanent contact, not so much with him but with Miguel Torrecilla and Ral Sanlleh, who tell us how close he is and is still aware of each situation. The important thing is that you know all the decisions we are going to make.
Talking to JIM is one of the things I want to do in the next few days. And with Jorge Mas, more than with him, Torrecilla and Sanlleh tell me how attentive they are to everything”
Q. How many signings does this squad need?
R. I don’t know how to say a number but we have clearly defined profiles. We will try to make them players who make the difference and that we get it right. We want to make that leap that the team needs.
Q: The main problem in recent seasons has been the lack of goals. What kind of strikers are you looking for?
R. We are looking for profiles of players who have regular goalscoring figures in previous years. Players who already have that experience and have been scorers. Sports steering has a wide range of possibilities. It is important that they know the category but we also open ourselves to the foreign market.
P. Sabin Merino could not score any goal last season. Is it a problem or does he have it?
R. He is a player who has experience in other teams of having scored goals. He has not had the fortune to score in these months, but I am sure that with work and our help we will try to improve his performance. He can continue contributing to the team.
I am sure that with work and our help we will try to improve Sabin’s performance. You can continue to contribute to the team.”
P. What percentage of the squad that is going to start the League would you like to have on July 4 when you return to work?
R. As ideal all, but we will see. There are many players who come on loan and we have spoken with many. We will talk with everyone and try to reach an agreement to reach solutions.
Q. Would you like a player from Inter Miami to come?
R. We are aware of possibilities due to the collaboration between the different clubs. The most important thing is that we can bring the solutions that we have as priorities.
Q. And about Ibiza?
R. I know the players very well and I know that some could be important.
Q. How many of those on loan have options to continue?
R. Some have taken advantage of opportunities on their teams. We will talk to them to see what their motivations are and what is best for them. We will make decisions.
Q. What do you expect from Zapater at 37?
R. That it gives us what we know it can give us. The mixture between youngsters and veterans can be a good mix to maintain that feeling from Zaragoza.
P. There is a lot of talk about players from Atlético de Madrid who can reach Real Zaragoza. Is that interest real?
R. They are players who have had a very good season and it would be interesting to bring them in, but the other teams will think the same. We will try to take the best possibilities with the budget we have.
Those from Atltico are players who have had a very good season and it would be interesting to bring them, but we will take the best chances with the budget we have”
P. How is the topic of Mouse and a possible replacement?
R. What we want is for there to be maximum competitiveness in each of the positions. We will talk about the player and what is best for all parties.
P. And with Narvez?
R. We already have a first contact. I know that last year he did not have the best performance of him but he is a player with a good track record and experience. I’ll talk more with him.
Q. Are there too many players in the midfield?
R. No number will have to leave.
Q. Is the central zone of the defense complete with the current four players that are currently there?
R. The defense was one of the bases that was good. Juan Ignacio worked it well. All the positions are susceptible to improvements but we have a good nucleus there and I am calm.
Q. How would you like to be remembered by La Romareda the day you leave the club?
R. With love, as someone hardworking who put a lot of hope. If they remember us with a smile and joy, it is that we have done our job well. Hopefully as the promotion man, that would be the best.
