ANDIt’s curious, but in Valencia’s journey in Europe, the city of Milan has been a constant, but always in decisive matches against Inter and on very few occasions against Milan. In fact, throughout its history Valencia and Milan they have faced each other four times and all of them in friendly matches, two of them in the Naranaja trophy.
The first of them had as its great protagonist the one who will soon become the new coach of the Mestalla club, Genaro Gattuso. The Italian, in a pre-season friendly match at the amsterdam-arena left his stamp on the disciples of Rafael Benitez, that they were starting what would be a legendary team and that they came as a big team after the two consecutive Champions League finals.
It was the summer of 2001 and in that game Gattuso fired left and right. In fact, he got to see a yellow card (remember that it was a pre-season friendly in the middle of July) the only one of the game for a hard entry on Angulo, today a coach of the Valencian subsidiary. The chronicles of that day tell us that the Rossoneri midfielder was used with special harshness and there even came to be some tangana to recriminate his attitude.
Valencia won
That game ended with victory for Valencia by a goal to two with a comeback included with goals in the second half of Gonzalo De los Santos and Kily González. It was the only time in his extensive career that the new Valencia coach saw faces with the one that will be his team. And he left his seal and an ‘indelible’ memory.
