The United Kingdom Government has announced that all travelers arriving in England from Tuesday will have to present a negative test for COVID-19, a tightening of the restrictions that the authorities justify by the expansion of the omicron variant.
The measure, which establishes a maximum period of 48 hours before the trip to carry out the test, will affect all people over 12 years of age, regardless of whether they have completed the vaccination schedule against COVID-19 or not.
The Minister of Health, Sajid Javid, explained this Saturday that the Government seeks to “buy time” to protect itself as much as possible against the expansion of the new variant, detected for the first time in South Africa, according to the BBC.
In England alone, a total of 129 omicron cases have been reported, to which should be added 30 in Scotland and one more in Wales. In recent days, the Ministry of Health has detected 21 positives in people linked to Nigeria, so this country will be on the red list from Monday and travelers will have to quarantine for ten days in a hotel.
The Government of Boris Johnson already tightened the measures before last week in fear of an uncontrolled outbreak of infections, which resulted in the imposition of a test two days after arrival to all travelers and in the mandatory nature of the mask in certain spaces, including public transport.
