These are the Mamba defense systems that France has installed in Romania in the face of the threat of war in Ukraine

The French authorities reported yesterday the deployment in Romania of the Mamba ground-to-air defense system in response to threats that may arise in the context of the war in Ukraine.

“It can provide a protection bubble for the benefit of forces operating in the area,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff highlighted in a statement.

According to the spokesman for the French Armed Forces, Pascal Ianni, the “first vocation” of this new weaponry is to “protect” a NATO air base , which houses several thousand soldiers, according to the TF1 television network.

SAMP/T, also known as MAMBA in the French military, is an anti-missile system designed to counter all current and future airborne threats, including cruise missiles, unmanned and unmanned aerial vehicles, and 600 km tactical ballistic missiles.

The MAMBA medium-range surface-to-air system, which is manned by one hundred airmen, is an advanced weapon system that can shield forces operating within its coverage area by creating a protective bubble.

SAMP/T uses Aster 30 Blok 1 missiles, whose maximum speed is 1.4 km / sec. These missiles have the ability to intercept targets at altitudes between 50 m and 20 km. Against aircraft flying at altitudes above 3 km, the maximum range of the Aster 30 missile is 100 km. Against aircraft flying at altitudes below 3 km, the Aster 30’s range is 50 km.

To increase the effectiveness of the system and meet the needs of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD), it is connected and integrated through a tactical data link with Romania’s defense and missile defense systems.

Almost 530 kilometers separate Romania, an Atlantic Alliance member since 2004, and Ukraine, a war-torn country since the announcement of Russia’s incursion at the end of February.
