The United Kingdom Ministry of Health has confirmed 50,867 COVID-19 infections this Thursday, a day after the British Government has imposed restrictions due to the pandemic, such as the return from teleworking or the obligation to present the vaccination certificate to access certain facilities.
In addition, the British health authorities have recorded another 148 deaths from the disease. With these data, the totals in the European country have risen to 10,660,981 infected since the pandemic began and 146,135 fatalities due to the disease.
The UK Health Minister, Sajid Javid, on Thursday justified the adoption of the new measures, which are “necessary” to protect the British public health system. However, the restrictions have not been liked by the entire political spectrum of the country, not even within the Conservative Party. There are already more than 20 ‘Tory’ deputies who will vote next week in Parliament against the measures, according to the BBC.
All the measures imposed in England, including the obligation to wear a mask in most public places, such as theaters or cinemas, are foreseen in what the Boris Johnson Administration calls ‘Plan B’, presented in September in case the situation worsened. According to the ‘premier’, tightening the measures is a “proportionate and sensible” approach.
The British Parliament has already approved the reintroduction of the mandatory use of the mask in public transport and shops in England, within the framework of a worsening of the pandemic situation in the European country and in view of the concerns raised by the omicron variant. The United Kingdom abolished the mandatory use of a mask, and the rest of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, on July 19.
The high numbers of COVID-19 infections that the British health authorities have verified in a sustained manner in recent weeks led experts to request that the Government introduce restrictive measures to stop the spread of the disease.
The British Government has trusted the development of the pandemic in the country and the lifting of restrictions to contain its advance to the vaccination plan against COVID-19. As of this Thursday, 81.1 percent of the British population has the complete vaccination scheme.
