The UN has applauded the “peaceful and orderly” way in which the Gambia’s presidential elections have taken place, in which the current president, Adama Barrow, aspires to re-election, already without the former dictator Yahya Jamé in the shortlist of candidates.
The more than 1,500 voting centers closed at the scheduled time on Saturday and the results are expected this Sunday. Gambians vote with a system of marbles, in such a way that they deposit them in the ballot box of the candidate to whom they want to grant their vote.
Barrow, who went to vote accompanied by his two wives in the capital, Banjul, took his victory for sure. “We will never lose these elections. It will be the most overwhelming victory in the history of this country,” according to statements collected by the Gambian portal Fatu Network.
Pending the results, the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Mahamat Salé Annadif, wanted to applaud in a statement the “maturity” of all political actors, as well as the responsibility of a population that “has exercised their civic duty in an exemplary manner to consolidate peace and democracy. “
The international representative hopes that this “calm atmosphere” will also continue until the results are published. Likewise, it trusts that any questions that may arise later will be resolved through the “legal mechanisms”.
