The Security Law issued by China for Hong Kong in June 2020 caused many Hong Kongers to leave the country.
The new legislation marked a turning point after the pro-democracy revolts that began in 2014 and intensified in 2019.
Its detractors see it as a final blow against the freedoms they enjoyed in Hong Kong under the principle of “one country, two systems” and defended by the Chinese government.
China, for its part, argues that the rule is necessary for stability in the region.
In this context, a growing community of Hong Kongers has sought refuge in Blackpool, a coastal town in England, facing the Irish Sea.
“The situation in Hong Kong deteriorated rapidly and the actions of the CCP (Communist Party of China) made me realize that Hong Kong is no longer a good place to live if you are young,” says a young Hong Kong man from a hotel in this city, one of the poorest in the UK.
BBC Mundo traveled there to find out why many Hong Kong citizens have chosen this place and what hopes they have of returning to their place of origin.
