Valveowner of the computer video game platform Steam, warns that Windows 7 and Windows 8 will not receive support for the application after January 1, 2024. The information has been confirmed on the support page, where the measure is justified in the lack of update fixes for features required by both operating systems. Users still using these systems should receive a notice indicating the matter in the app itself throughout 2023.
end of support
The note published on the platform confirms that the Steam client will no longer work on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems and that those interested must use a newer system, such as Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is worth mentioning that currently the rate of users using Windows 7/8 editions corresponds to less than 2% of total active users on the platform.
Valve alleges that the measure is taken as a consequence of the implementation of a series of new app security features and tools, which uses a recent version of Google Chrome that does not support older Microsoft operating systems. It is also mentioned that upcoming versions of the app will require features and security updates that are only available in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Support for Windows XP and Vista ended in 2019
The end of the cycle of Windows 7 and 8 will come five years after Windows XP and Vista also dropped support. At that time, at the beginning of 2019, Valve used the same justification to close support for the systems and although the operating service will not end until 2024, from the platform it is recommended to all Windows 7/8/8.1 users that for security be updated as soon as possible.
“Computers running these operating systems, when connected to the Internet, are susceptible to new malware and other vulnerabilities that will not be patched. That malware can cause your PC, Steam and games to malfunction or crash. That malware can also be used to steal your Steam account credentials or other services,” warns the note posted on the support page.
