The leader of the Labor opposition, the moderate Keir Starmer, who takes up to 18 points ahead of the conservativesHe does not want anything or anyone to cloud his chances of becoming the next British prime minister ahead of the general elections scheduled for 2024. That is why he has now vetoed his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn, from running as a candidate for the formation.
The National Executive Committee of the Labor Party approved yesterday by 22 to 12 votes a motion proposed by Starmer on the grounds that supporting Corbyn, who in 2019 garnered the worst results since 1935 Between accusations of mismanagement, it would “decrease” the chances of being able to win in the next appointment with the polls.
The truth is that Corbyn, who is about to turn 74, has always been a controversial figure. After more than three decades as a rebel MP for the wealthy London Borough of North Islington, in 2015 he became the leader of the formation against all odds. His anti-monarchist speech, in favor of the nationalization of the railways, gas and electricity and his defense of the figure of Hugo Chávez and the Palestinian cause earned him the title of ‘British Pablo Iglesias’. Although he had great support from the bases, it was never accepted by its own ranks.
In 2020 he was already suspended from the party in response to his reaction to a report by the British Equality and Human Rights Commission that accused the formation under his leadership of antisemitism, a claim that Corbyn has always disputed. Although the executive restored his affiliation shortly after, the current leader did not approve reinstating him as a Labor deputy. Corbyn trusted that he would do it in the face of the next elections. But it has not been that way.
The veteran socialist, who has represented the London constituency of Islington North in the House of Commons since 1983, now has the option of running as an independent candidate for that seat. But, at the close of this edition, he had not ruled on the matter. His words on his Twitter were only to accuse his successor of having “denigrated the democratic foundations” Of the information. Corbyn recalled in a message posted on social networks that he joined the party at the age of 16 and has been elected deputy “ten times in a row” for Islington North in London. “I am proud to represent a community that stands up for vulnerable people, joins workers on picket lines and fights for transformative change,” he said. Likewise, he warned that neither he nor other progressive Labor members are going to go “anywhere”, but that they are going to continue “fighting” for a left-wing alternative.
