Tenerife faces its particular Everest this Sunday. The group led by Luis Miguel Ramis has had an exciting career this year, but he still hasn’t been able to link three wins in a row… in his previous seven attempts! This Sunday, against Málaga and at the Heliodoro, he will have the eighth opportunity to end a ‘curse’ who has become his main enemy when it comes to firmly opposing one of the two places for direct promotion.
After failing in the seven previous attempts, the Blue and Whites have a new ally so that the result, this time, will be different. This is Mario González, who is already nicknamed ‘Super’ Mario by the island’s fans due to the decisive nature of his goals. The attacker from Burgos is in full swing of successes and has scored no less than four goals in the last five days.
It’s difficult, but it can still be achieved… we don’t have the ‘playoffs’ guaranteed, nor are we ruled out for direct promotion
Each one of these successes, like the two he signed in his debut at the Heliodoro with Tenerife last February, have helped the team led by Ramis to win in all those games. He scored a couple against Ibiza (2-0) and, after spending the month of March without seeing a door, he recovered his instinct last April. Scored in Anoeta and the Blue and Whites beat Real Sociedad B (1-2), also scoring the following weekend in the win against Fuenlabrada (3-1). And, in the last two days, his goals were also decisive for the islanders to win in Lugo (0-2) and Girona (0-1).
This was the decisive goal of ‘Super’ Mario in Montilivi…
Loaned by Sporting de Braga in the last winter market, although with a mandatory purchase option in case of promotion to First Division, ‘Super Mario’ is ambitious and assures that this Tenerife “can still fight for something else and, until the math says otherwise, we are going to fight for it. It’s hard, but it can still be done. We don’t have the ‘playoffs’ assured, nor are we ruled out for direct promotion,” he said.
I know we haven’t won three games in a row and also that we always win when I score. I just hope that mine is not jinxed
González recalls that the squad is “thinking only of how to get the three points against Malaga this Sunday. You have to go day by day and take advantage of this good dynamic. I know we haven’t won three games in a row and also that we always win when I score. I just hope mine doesn’t get jinxed. I’m very happy because it’s not the same as when you score and don’t win. Now, when I score, happiness is double”, he said, referring to the fact that all his goals have translated into victories for Tenerife.
