The snake island, to just 45 kilometers from the Romanian city of Sulina, is a strategic point for Ukraine, but also for Russia. Both countries are immersed in a war of positions at sea to gain control of this strategic enclave. Moscow he is the one who currently controls it, but kyiv is trying by all means to regain control over this practically uninhabited islet. He tried it during the celebration of Victory Day in Russia, on May 9, but failed. At least that is what Moscow has assured.
Information released by the Russian Defense Ministry suggests that Ukraine has so far lost 30 drones in the area around the snake island in the last three days, including nine Bayraktar TB2 drones, one of which was shot down by Russian air defenses on Tuesday, according to the Defense Ministry. Snake Island fell at the beginning of the invasion on February 24 with the assault of two Russian ships, led by the Moscowwhich weeks later was sunk by a Ukrainian missile.
Moscow maintains that Ukraine has also lost three Su-24 bombers, one Su-27 fighter jet, three armored amphibious assault ships, 10 different helicopters and more than 50 soldiers during the attempt to retake Snake Island
From Ukraine, the information coming out of Moscow has not been confirmed or denied, but they have announced that during these days there have been attacks around the island of Serpents, including Victory Day itself, when Russia commemorates the defeat of the german army in WWII.
Ukraine struck back with Bayraktar TB2 drones destroying a Serna-class landing craft and two Raptor-class patrol boats, as well as damaging a third.
What is Snake Island?
Snake Island is a small territory in the middle of the sea about 200 square meters which houses a single town and a small population. It was the scene of battles like the one in Fidonisi in 1788 and during World War II it housed an Axis radio while under Romanian control.

Currently, it serves as a territory to delimit the exclusive economic zones of Romania and Ukraine. For some analysts, the island is key to kyiv’s maritime claims.
