The Dakar Rally go faithful to your appointment in this month of January. The 2022 edition of the toughest raid event in the world is once again located in Saudi Arabia, where from this Saturday, January 1 to Friday, January 14 of the same month the best pilots of the planet will be looked for in the desert.
As usual, twelve stages will make up the race. The novelty in this edition in this regard is the name of the usual prologue that precedes these stages, since it has been decided to separate the initial stage into two days to sign the total of thirteen days of competition, which is joined by a day of break. Jeddah you will experience both the start and the finish line of the race.
The edition of this 2022, as it happened last year, will have to face the coronavirus pandemic situation. The pilots have undergone exhaustive controls before the start to determine their participation in the test. Several of them have had to wait at the last minute to find out if they could continue with the path they had designed.
A way between the sand and the dunes which is the main bet of the race for this 2022. The Dakar has bet on two of its key elements and has promised that navigation will play a fundamental role in this edition for those who want to choose to win the test. In addition, the organization has opted for the greater importance of electric power vehicles and there will be some cars with hybrid technology, such as the one that will drive Carlos Sainz.
Cars, motorcycles, quads, trucks, SSV, light and classic prototypes will make up the main classifications of this edition of the Dakar. As is usual, cars and motorcycles will take the lion’s share of the limelight. In the first the French defends his title Stéphane Peterhansel, fourteen-time winner of the race between cars and motorcycles. In the second, the winner in 2021 was the Argentine Kevin Benavides.
A good list of Spanish pilots will fight to win the titles, who will seek to expand the list of national winners of the event. This is made up of Marc Coma (five titles, winner in motorcycles in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015), Carlos Sainz (three titles, winner in cars in 2010, 2018 and 2020) and Nani Rome (two titles, winner in motorcycles in 2004 and in cars in 2014).
Sainz, with his co-pilot Lucas Cruz, will command the Spanish delegation in the Dakar. There will be a total of 81 participants of national origin, between pilots and co-pilots. Among the most prominent Spaniards you will also find, in cars, Nani Roma and Álex Haro, the debutant in the category Laia Sanz, Carlos Checa and Ferran Marco or Isidre Esteve and Txema Villalobos. Meanwhile, they will be on motorcycles Lorenzo Santolino, Joan Pedrero or Joan Barreda. They will lead the participation in the rest of the categories Cristina Gutierrez in lightweight prototypes, Gerard Farrés in SSV, Toni Vingut on quads or Jordi Juvanteny, José Luis Criado and Jorge Ballbé in trucks.
There are many pilots who aspire to conquer the Dakar. In the main categories, they stand out Sainz, Stéphane Peterhansel or Nasser Al Attiyah in cars or Kevin Benavides, Pablo Quintanilla, Joan Barreda or Ricky Brabec in motorcycles, among many other candidates.
