“The crews of the diesel-electric submarines ‘Kolpino’ and ‘Stari Oskol’ of the Black Sea Fleet launched torpedoes with practice shells in submerged conditions,” the ministry said in a statement, quoted by the EFE news agency.
The Black Sea Fleet, dependent on the Russian navy, with bases in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, operates in areas close to the territorial waters of Ukraine, the target of the Russian invasion.
The Russian submarines have submerged to the expected depth for target practice, the Russian military command said.
“The submarine crews successfully fulfilled the stated tasks and conducted torpedo launches from the submerged position against a naval target simulating a warship at a safe distance,” the Russian defense said.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that the effectiveness of the use of these weapons will be assessed after data collection from the exercises.
The entity added that these practices are a mandatory element for the preparation of submarine crews and are carried out in accordance with the plans established by the Russian military command.
