Leopoldo López Gil, MEP of the Popular Party, asked the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, “firmness” against the Latin American countries that support the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and they do not condemn aggression against Ukraine. The Vice President of the European Parliament, the liberal Dita Charanzová, also joined that proposal.
In a letter, they denounce the support of these regimes for Russia in the midst of an invasion of Ukraine. ”In Latin America, Putin has close collaborators, such as the various tyrants from Cuba, Nicaragua or Venezuela, who have no qualms about justifying aggression against Ukraine. Nevertheless, the oppressed peoples of these countries are against this situation”, explained the father of the Venezuelan opponent Leopoldo López, in a letter signed together with the vice president of the European Parliament, the Czech liberal Dita Charanzova.
The letter comes after Borrell’s Latin American tour, which took him to Chile and Panama, and to whom they have demanded “work to condemn regimes that systematically violate Human Rights” and “take firm, coherent and unison positions on the part of the European Union” before these countries.
