Gustavo Petro himself has asked the Attorney General’s Office to investigate his eldest son – product of a relationship with Katia Burgos who did not get married – together with his uncle Juan Fernando Petro Urrego.
Day Váquez also affirms that her ex-partner met with various ministers and senior Cabinet officials from his father to request positions in the different portfolios for friends and acquaintances. The meetings were admitted by the Minister of Commerce, who assured that Nicolás wanted to “introduce Mrs. Adelina Covo, who knows the issues of the Cartagena Chambers of Commerce”, the former mother-in-law of the ambassador to Venezuela Armando Benedetti and with an extensive political career in her region. The ministers of the Interior, Agriculture, Mines and Health also acknowledge meetings, although clarifying that charges were not discussed.
Petro Burgos is a lawyer trained in climate change and governance who lives in Barranquilla, where he has made a political career. He tried to be governor, but did not get enough votes in 2019, and he took a regional seat in the Atlántico department. There he appeared for the first time since the scandal began a couple of weeks ago. «It is not true that he owns a 2.5 million dollar penthouse, nor is it true that he pays high rent figures; It is also not true that I have disappeared or that I have left the country taking refuge in Mexico or the United States, “he read, referring to the information that he had not been able to be formally notified of the investigations because he had not been found at his residence.
He defended the presumption of innocence and asked the Prosecutor’s Office and the National Protection Unit (UNP) “Guarantee and reinforce the safety of my ex-sentimental partner”who has stated that he has been the victim of acts of intimidation without pointing to those responsible.
Burgos did not mention his relationship with the president, since Petro has insisted that they are not so closely linked. In an interview with the magazine “Cambio”, he admitted that he was an absent father because the guerrilla activity in the M19 prevented him from starting a family while in hiding. “We never really had a chance to live together. I did not create it, that is the reality »he said emphatically on Twitter this week.
In recent months, Nicolás Petro Burgos has been at the center of the target. He has publicly criticized some of his father’s decisionswhom he accompanied during the campaign and was sanctioned by the CNE for improper management of resources from his own regional campaign in 2019. In January, he was photographed together with Musa Abraham Besaile, son of a former senator prosecuted for “parapolitics”, the ties of politicians with paramilitary groups revealed in 2006. Later, he participated in a luxurious party that coincided with the former drug trafficker Samuel Santander Lopesierra “the Marlboro man”, one of those who would have given him the 200,000 euros for which he is being investigated.
Then his sister Andrea said publicly that the presidential family would have to “set the example” in your contacts. The name of that other daughter of the president – that he had with his first wife – has become relevant because it has been known that she allegedly warned the president about the scandals of her brother since December and Petro did not act for two months.
Andrea, who lives in France, has admitted that Day Vásquez contacted her in December to tell her about the break with Nicolás. According to Mary Luz Herranhe would also have told him that he wanted to make public that he had kept the funds for the presidential campaign, for which the president was warned.
Petro assures that he does not remember when he found out, but that as soon as he found out, he warned his ministers not to associate with Nicolás. That happened on February 2. Facing the public, the Presidency published the statement asking to investigate Petro Burgos just hours before “Semana” made public an interview with Vásquez with the March accusations. The House of Nariño was aware that such a publication would take place, confirmed the digital medium “La Silla Vacía”.
