The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed the diplomat Librado Orozco Zapata as the Peruvian ambassador to Venezuela who will replace Richard Rojas, under investigation for an alleged money laundering of his party, the ruling Peru Libre.
After the rupture of relations with Venezuela, Orozco Zapata, who has been Peruvian ambassador to El Salvador since 2018 and has worked in the diplomatic headquarters of Russia, Hungary and Canada, will occupy the position, although at the moment it is unknown when he will assume his functions, according to picks up the newspaper ‘La República’.
Orozco Zapata has also been Peru’s representative to the United Nations and has held the positions of Director of Multilateral Affairs, General Director of International Relations and Vice Minister of Defense Policies.
Regarding the previous candidate, the Minister of Justice of Peru, Aníbal Torres, reported in November that the appointment of Richard Rojas was not made official, since the Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, did not propose his appointment to the Council of Ministers due to to the accusations that fell on him.
In fact, the Judiciary issued an order to prevent the politician from leaving the South American country for six months due to his alleged involvement in money laundering, an order that was issued after the announcement of his appointment.
Also accused of participating in a criminal organization by the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office, Rojas was originally appointed ambassador to Panama, but the authorities did not approve this designation.
