The Northern Irish Police reported on Tuesday that they have found four suspected homemade bombs at the cemetery in the town of Derry, also known as Londonderry, where an unauthorized gathering of Republican sympathizers took place the day before that ended in riots.
“The operation was implemented following the discovery of a suspected pipe bomb in the cemetery just after 6.30 this morning. Following subsequent searches within the grounds of the cemetery, three other suspected pipe bombs were discovered,” it said in a statement.
The Police have also stressed that the four bombs, found in the surroundings of the cemetery, have been “saved” and saved for further “examination” later. They have also denounced that, during the operation to remove the devices, the protesters have launched Molotov cocktails, stones and bottles.
People dressed in paramilitary uniforms led a rally the day before, which was not authorized and ended in the local cemetery. They commemorated the Easter Rising of 1916when republican factions rebelled in Ireland against the control exercised by the United Kingdom.
The recovery of the homemade bombs on the grounds of the cemetery occurs shortly before the imminent arrival of the president of the United States, Joe Bidencoinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreements, which ended 30 years of violent conflict in Northern Ireland.
