The Meta Corporationhas canceled the development and production of its virtual and augmented reality (AR) glasses”Quest Pro 2”. The intention of the company owned by Mark Zuckerberg is to focus all its resources on the launch of the evolution of the device, the next “quest 3”. From the company’s headquarters they assure that they are preparing a great commercial program for the renewed device, which will take advantage of specifications that supposedly exceed what was presented in the “Quest Pro 2”. As they explain, the glasses will be marketed with lower prices and better featuressuch as an even higher resolution, in addition to a depth sensor and two 4MP cameras.
Quest Pro halts production
In this same sense and according to The Information, “Quest Pro” will be manufactured until the stock of components is exhausted, and Meta will not request any replacement material. The model has not worked commerciallyamong other factors because the “Pro” model It was not produced with the general public in mind, but with the corporate market. So much so that its “social” or “gaming” side hardly had a place in advertising campaigns.
It is worth noting that the above is not related to the regular “Quest”, which is still fully active. Neither have Meta confirmed the cancellation of the project for virtual/augmented reality. Considering that these corporations do not usually make public the liquidations of their projects, it is possible that a confirmation in this regard will not be issued either.
The first model “Meta Quest Pro” was released in October 2022 and received mostly negative reviews. The main problems were related to its design, pointed out as too heavy and with a format that did not adapt well to the physiognomy of the users. With a 40% slimmer optical profile compared to the “Quest 2”, the new device appears to have redesigned with simpler and more ergonomic lines. Also thanks to advances in tracking technology, the external rings have been removed so that the controls feel like a more natural extension of the hand. Also, hand tracking will be supported out of the box, so can be explored without drivers thanks to Direct Toucha system that allows you to use only your hands to interact with virtual objects.
More than double the graphics performance
As highlighted in Meta, “Quest 3 presents a combination of the highest resolution screen to date and the pancake lens to ensure that the content displayed is better than ever. To power those extra pixels, these will be the first headphones to will feature the latest generation Snapdragon chipset, developed in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies.” The chipset offers more than double the graphics performance of the GPU Previous-generation Snapdragon in Quest 2, which means “you’ll experience smoother performance and incredibly sharp details in immersive games.”
Although we will have to wait for its premiere to discover and explore its possibilities, very soon we will have news about its biggest rival in this field (mixed reality), The “Apple Vision Pro” will arrive in 2024 with a suggested price of $3,499.
