Matthew Hoppe landed in Mallorca on the last day of the summer market in 2021. He did it with the clear objective of reinforcing the vermilion forward and to enjoy minutes to tan in the elite of Spanish football. In the long term, Hoppe had his sights set on the World Cup in Qatar next November. The idea that the American had was to take enough gallons to be able to get everything to said appointment. The actual situation is completely opposite.
Hoppe has not had many opportunities in Mallorca. Neither first with Luis García Plaza nor at the end with Javier Aguirre. In the 2021-22 season, the American only played five First Division games. In those games he did not see a goalkeeper, but he did distribute an assist: that of Kang-In Lee’s goal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The question they ask him in an interview in Bild is clear. Does Hoppe regret leaving Schalke 04 to play for Mallorca? The American, however, answers that not at all. “My wish was to go to the World Cup, so I needed the challenge of playing in a higher league. That’s why I had to take the risk. And Schalke could use the money well in the situation.”
The striker was a regular in the USA calls, but without regularly seeing him dressed in vermilion, Hoppe has lost that protagonism – he has not been summoned since October. In this interview he does not reveal what his future will be. Matthew has a contract with Mallorca, but anything could happen to him to have more options to play in the World Cup. “I trust my agentsays the American.
Hoppe is still in contact with his teammates from Shalcke 04, which could open the door to a supposed return. It also suggests that sooner or later he will play in Germany again. “I see all the summaries of the team and I talk a lot with the reserve team players. I like the country and I am open to going back one day. The Schalke fans are great, he will be happy.”
