BRUSSELS, Dec. 8 () –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has opined this Wednesday that the migratory tension with Belarus is “overcome” and has highlighted the European actions against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, which he has said has failed in its attempt to pressure the European bloc.
In a meeting in Brussels with Spanish journalists, the head of European diplomacy considered the crisis on the border with Poland “over”, where thousands of migrants gathered at the end of October in a flow orchestrated by Minsk.
“For Lukashenko things have not turned out well. If he thought that with this pressure on our borders he was going to achieve something, he has really achieved nothing more than to create a problem for himself,” he said.
Borrell has assured that the EU has managed to “cut” the flow of migrants traveling to Minsk with the intention of crossing into Europe, thanks to the sanctions against those responsible for migratory movements and the diplomatic exercise with the countries of origin to close air routes .
A week ago the European bloc adopted the fifth round of sanctions against Minsk that includes measures against the Belarusian state airlines, Belavia, and the Syrian Sham Wings. He also added to his blacklist border officials, travel agencies and hotels involved in the immigration scheme.
Thus, it has indicated that now the migrants have already been withdrawn from the border area with Poland, receive humanitarian assistance from the United Nations and return flights are already being scheduled.
In this sense, he highlighted the diplomatic work of Europe with some thirty countries that has made it possible to agree with Turkey, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Uzbekistan to impose limits on flights to Belarus.
