The president of Colombia, Iván Duque, announced this Sunday the arrest of two important guerrilla leaders during the official ceremony for the opening of the polls for the second round of the presidential elections that are being held this Sunday.
The detainees are Fidel Claudio Silva, alias ‘Simón’, a member of the staff of the Western War Front of the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and Alexander Losada Ramírez, alias ‘Monocuco’, commander of the support network of the guerrilla of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Duque has highlighted the importance of these arrests of guerrilla leaders to “Go eliminating the symbols of evil throughout the Colombian territory.”
“This is a very important message, no criminal is going to be able to intimidate the Colombian people, today we Colombians will go to the polls and vote and elect the next president and we will do so by celebrating this democracy, defending it and defending our freedom,” he stressed.
He has also taken the opportunity to call for participation. “Today we have to go vote to protect our democracy,” has pointed. Thus, he has invited the population to “come out en masse to defend this democracy, these freedoms that we have consolidated” and has highlighted that Colombia “is one of the most solid democracies in this hemisphere.”
In addition, he has promised to support who will be his successor. “Whoever the people elect today will have our full support and the entire splicing process,” he indicated.
In the field of security, Duque stressed that the security forces are “at their maximum deployment” to ensure that all Colombians “speak freely.”
“This is a commitment to the constitution and the law. We have a unified command post and the accompaniment of control organisms. We have 102,000 tables across the country. We will be guaranteeing all Colombians the vote“, has explained.
