On the internet and particularly on social networks, scams are becoming more and more creative. There is no longer talk of downloading documents or pretending to be someone else. Now they seek to obtain personal information or subscription to a service claiming that we won a raffle or a gift card. And they do it all by tagging us on social media. Can this be avoided?
The question is simple and logic indicates that if we want to maintain our privacy and choose who tags us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, let’s be we who choose without having to configure the account as private… Or receive a daily barrage of notifications. In recent weeks, an aggressive campaign in this regard has been denounced by a shopping site, Shein, which tags left and right on Instagram. It doesn’t matter that we select to block the person who sends the message and the future accounts they have, the next day there will be a new label.
To avoid this without putting a patch for each new account, you have to follow three very simple steps to cancel all options to receive emails.
The first of them is to go to our Profile. There we select Settings, then Privacy and finally Labels and Mentions. There you will see three options: Allow tags from anyone, Do not allow tags, and Allow tags from people you follow. We select this last option. It is true that we can lose some important mentions, but these will appear hidden in the messages section, only that we won’t find out unless we go looking for them.
The second step to guarantee that we will not receive more unwanted tags is, in this same section, below, we will have the Manually Approve Labels Option. Click there, accept and all the options will appear with the tags pending approval: if it is someone who follows us but we do not follow or someone we know who has no problem tagging us, we will approve. But it is done one by one.
Finally and also in this section, below we have the option of Select who can mention us. There are also three options: Allow all mentions, Don’t allow mentions, or Allow only from people you follow. We select the latter and we can breathe easier and forget about the barrage of advertising messages.
Obviously it is also possible to select, in all the sections that nobody (neither followed nor unknown) tags or mentions us. That is already a personal decision.
