PARIS, Dec. 9 (DPA / EP) –
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reiterated on Thursday Berlin’s opposition to France’s plans to categorize nuclear electricity as “green energy”.
“It is well known that we have different positions on the nuclear issue,” said Baerbock during his first official visit to Paris since he took office, where he met with his French counterpart, Jean-Yves Le Drian.
France, along with Poland and the Czech Republic, advocate calling nuclear energy “green”, while Germany, Austria and Luxembourg are against this idea. France generates most of its electrical energy in this way. In addition, Baerbock is the co-leader of The Greens, one of the legs of the new coalition of the Government of Germany, an anti-nuclear party since its foundation.
However, Baerbock has emphasized the importance of relations between Germany and France for the European Union and has welcomed the conference on the future of Europe proposed by Paris for when he assumes the rotating Presidency of the Council of Europe in 2022. The bloc is currently debating arriving to a “taxonomy” to guide investment towards projects considered sustainable.
