Europe, on red alert due to the threat of an intense heat wave

Heat waves are common when summer arrives. The months of July and August, annually, usually present several intervals of days in which the temperatures are higher than normal. Sometimes, once the summer season has entered, they surprise earlier than expected. But with the climate change that our planet is suffering, they are becoming more frequent and make citizens concerned about the environment more alert.

For a few days, Spain has been experiencing scorching heat with abnormal temperatures, which in some parts of the country have exceeded 40 degrees. All this while spring is still giving its last breath and summer has not yet arrived. But these hot days, so far, They have also reached other corners of Europe, which will be more as the weekend goes by.

At least fourteen French departments are under maximum surveillance, after much of the country reached 35 degrees yesterday. The southwest of the Atlantic coast, as well as the Atlantic Pyrenees and the High Pyrenees, are the most affected. In addition, another 56 departments are in the orange wing.

It is the first time in France that the red alert has been registered in some areas of the territory at this point in June, while the orange alerts are usually somewhat more frequent. Hotter even than the latest precedents, dating back to June-July 2019 and August 2020.

Paris or Lyon, as well as their outskirts, have adopted measures of the utmost urgency. Météo-France forecasts that temperatures will reach 40 or 42 degrees this Saturday around Bordeaux and Les Landes; 40 degrees in the Loire, Orléans and Paris and up to 39 degrees in Normandy.

On the other hand, after a few cloudy days, Germany expects record temperatures this weekend. Berlin could exceed 30 degrees, in the same way as cities like Hamburg. Also Frankfurt or Freiburg.

In Portugal, although this month of June has not reached those figures, last month was the hottest May since 1931. And in Italy, the authorities have already rationalized the water in some cities of the Padana plain and the Lombardy region was preparing for declare a state of emergency due to a record drought that threatens crops.
