Eight people died and another seven are missing after two small boats allegedly belonging to traffickers capsized off the coast of San Diego (California, USA), the authorities reported this Sunday.
The shipwrecks occurred on Saturday night, when rescue teams received an alert call on Blacks Beach, detailed the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department, according to local media.
The first rescuers who arrived at the scene found two capsized boats and seven lifeless bodies, while another deceased was found later. Seven other people are missing.
The rescue tasks lasted all night due to bad weather on the Californian coast, covered in a layer of fog.
daniel eddy, deputy director of operations for the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department, said there was a large debris field on Black’s Beach, which is jointly owned by San Diego and the state. The location is also known as Torrey Pines City Beach or Torrey Pines State Beach.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Eddie Berrios confirmed that eight people were dead and rescuers were looking for at least seven more. He did not know what kind of boats they were, but he commented that panga-type boats usually arrive at the place.
